National Gardening Week: 27 April – 3 May 2020

Next week is National Gardening Week (27 April – 3 May 2020), which is run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to raise awareness of gardening and horticulture, and to encourage more green fingers! This year, more than ever, those of us who are lucky enough to have gardens are truly appreciating them, perhaps for the first time.

The COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the world has led to the lockdown that the UK is currently experiencing. Our garden is the only outdoor space that is freely accessible to us at the moment, so what better time to celebrate National Gardening Week?

National Gardening Week is the nation’s biggest celebration of gardening and highlights the difference that gardens and gardening can make to people’s lives. It inspires the next generation of gardeners to experience the joy of growing and creating beautiful green spaces.

The RHS said they chose this year’s theme based on the results of a recent OnePoll Survey which showed that 52% of people in Britain have experienced feeling alone but that 53% of adults enjoy being surrounded by greenery, saying it boosts their mood. In these unsettling and challenging times, it’s more important than ever to find simple and positive ways for us all to relax and feel happy.

The annual event has grown in popularity year on year with thousands of people sharing their ‘passion for plants’ on social media.

How you can get involved in National Gardening Week…

Get planting

Whether you have a big garden, small garden, balcony or window boxes, you can order some seeds and soil online and get some pretty plants, flowers or herbs on the go. Plants can take up as little or as much space as you have, so there are options for everyone.

Enjoy the spring sunshine

Although we’re going through a strange and worrying time, for once, the British weather has come up trumps! The last few weeks have given us some fantastic weather, with blue skies and balmy temperatures. So even if you don’t feel like taking on a big garden overhaul, why not do a bit of weeding and deadheading to get some fresh air and soak up the rays?

Phone a friend

Most of us have at least one friend or family member who knows a lot about gardening, so why not pick their brain for hints and tips? Give them a call to find out what you need to know; it’ll also give you the chance to stay in touch! You could even go for a video call to show each other what you’ve been up to in the garden!

Time on your hands?

Many of us will find lockdown a bit boring and may be looking for things to do to keep us occupied. Why not get on with that garden project you’ve been dreaming of? Perhaps you want to re-turf the lawn, replace the patio or clear out some shrubs and bushes – whatever it is, now could be the ideal time! Most things can be ordered online so stay home and stay safe!

Spring clean your garden

Is your garden crying out for a bit of attention? Invest in a skip and get it cleared to enable you to fully enjoy your outdoor space during this time of isolation. It’ll feel great to get the job done and your garden will look so much better for it!

Share and bring a smile

Get involved by sharing your gardening photos on social media using the hashtag #NationalGardeningWeek.
