Helping maintain Hampshire’s highways

TJ Waste and Transport are working with Skanska UK to manage the waste and materials in and out of their Hampshire highways service sites. They have five depots across the county that house all that is needed to improve and maintain Hampshire’s roads.

The depots are located in Petersfield, Totton, Andover, Hook and Bishop’s Waltham. Skanska has a fleet of vehicles that carry out the road maintenance and repairs and on completion, they bring the unwanted materials back to the depots. TJ then comes in and removes all the hardcore, soil and stone waste on a daily basis.

TJ also supplies Skanska with wheelie bins at their head office in Winchester and skips in each of their depots; separate ones for wood, plastic, cardboard, green waste and hazardous waste. These skips are emptied at Skanska’s request, which is usually once or twice a month, and the majority of the contents are recycled.

If there is a particularly big project going on, TJ will supply grab lorries so that the large volumes of waste can be taken directly away from the work site, to one of TJ’s materials recycling facilities, where as much as possible of the waste will be earmarked for reuse.

TJ also supply Skanska with a range of aggregates for the project – Type 1 primary and recycled, sand, ballast and shingle from their two quarries in Hampshire – Butser Quarry and Hythe Quarry.

We also have drivers who are qualified to drive snow ploughs and they have been out on Hampshire roads during the last two Christmas periods.

Skanska has a seven-year partnership with Hampshire County Council to deliver highway maintenance and improvement works on all roads in the county. The contract maintains over 5,300 miles of carriageway, 3,800 miles of footways and 1,800 structures.

Skanska’s contract is due to run until 2024. It includes planned and reactive maintenance, improvement works, winter maintenance and emergency response.

Skanska, established in 1887, is one of the world’s leading project development and construction groups. Operating around the world in selected markets in Europe and the US, Skanska is listed on the Stockholm stock exchange and headquartered in Sweden’s capital city.

Their £1.9 Billion UK operation is one of the country’s top construction and development companies. It is an inclusive and responsible business that is helping to build a better society. Known for working on major projects such as the Gherkin, the M25 and Crossrail, they are building, upgrading and maintaining the country’s infrastructure for future generations. They bring together people and technology, as part of their objective to make construction a safer and more collaborative industry.

TJ contacted Skanska when they heard that they were tendering for the Hampshire highways contract and contributed to their proposal with information about the waste management plan. TJ’s Senior Sales Manager Simon Dunsford was the one who approached Skanska and was thrilled when TJ was confirmed as the waste management company.

Simon said: “It’s so important to build up good working relationships with clients and potential clients. They want to know that they can trust us, which they can, and that the service we offer will be reliable, consistent and good value for money. I’ve gotten to know the people at Skanska well and I visit them once a month to ensure they are happy with everything and to answer any queries they may have. Great customer care is what TJ is all about.”
