TJ celebrates Victorious waste management contract success

TJ Waste is celebrating the smooth running of yet another Victorious event, after completing their sixth year as the waste management provider for the popular south coast music festival.

TJ has built a strong partnership with the Victorious organisers, Victorious Festivals Ltd, over the past six years and the recurring awarding of the contract is a testament to the consistently high level of customer service TJ provides.

The festival took place on Southsea Common last weekend (26-28 August). It houses five stages – Common Stage, Castle Stage, Seaside, World Music and Acoustic – each hosting live music throughout the day and evening. There is also a kids’ arena, a beats and swing arena, a comedy tent, a premium enclosure and even a circus!

TJ supplied over 400 wheelie bins for use across the entire festival site. We delivered the bins in the week leading up to the start of the festival to ensure all the bins were in place ready for kick-off on Friday. In the early hours of Saturday, Sunday and Monday, a team from TJ went onsite to empty all the bins in preparation for the day’s festivities.

We had a team of over 30 TJ operatives onsite, including drivers and management, on each of the three days to ensure cleanliness and efficiency. We had 3 bin lorries and a range of other vehicles (vans, skip lorries and RORO lorries) to hand and we worked with an external team of around 100 people who were constantly litter picking and pulling bins for emptying.

There is an offsite campsite at Farlington Fields for those attending the whole weekend. We were also responsible for the waste management on the campsite, providing wheelie bins for general waste and recyclables for campers to use. We spent Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning clearing the site, ensuring all refuse was collected and that the bins were removed within 24 hours of the site being vacated.

All the festival waste was taken back to our Tipner Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for sorting to ensure that all unsegregated recyclables are extracted and recycled. We also have three other MRFs at Southampton, another in Portsmouth and at Yapton.

TJ Waste’s General Manager Luke Haskell said: “We’re delighted with the outcome of the festival’s waste management and clearance. Our team worked tirelessly over the weekend and were able to clear the site each day to a standard that exceeded Victorious’s expectations. Our high level of service only helps to strengthen our partnership with Victorious for future events and we look forward to working with them again very soon.”

This year’s Victorious line-up included Stereophonics, Bombay Bicycle Club and Primal Scream on Friday; Paolo Nutini, Bastille, The Wombats and Declan McKenna on Saturday; and Sam Fender, Anne-Marie, Nothing But Thieves, Suede and Becky Hill on Sunday.
