TJ hosts visit from Gosport Borough Council Leader

TJ Waste hosted a visit from the Leader of Gosport Borough Council, Peter Chegwin, at their Portsmouth Materials Recovery Facility recently, along with the team of council officers involved in the hugely successful Community Skip Service.

During the visit, the council representatives were able to see ‘behind the scenes’ of the skip services that they’ve been utilising in recent months.

Gosport’s Community Skip Service, which was launched in May, has proven a great success following a reduction in fly-tipping in the Borough. TJ won the contract to supply the skips on a regular basis for the organised events, which invite residents to dispose of bulky household rubbish safely and responsibly.

The visit allowed the officers to follow the waste through our processing plant to see resource recovery and recycling in action, enabling them to fully understand the process that they’ve utilised from start to finish.

Recovery and recycling is extremely important as it diverts waste from landfill, resulting in a more positive environmental outcome. TJ Waste is dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and endeavours to recycle or reuse up to 100% of the waste they handle.

TJ Waste has four Materials Recovery Facilities dotted along the south coast in Southampton, two in Portsmouth and one in Yapton. All waste is processed in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

TJ Waste General Manager, Luke Haskell, hosted the visit. He said: “It was great to have Peter and the rest of the team at the facility and to show them all the great work our teams do. When you hire a skip, you probably don’t give much thought to where the waste goes after it’s left your property, but our skilled operatives work hard day in, day out, to ensure all waste is directed down the most appropriate route for its type. The Gosport Community Skip Service has gotten off to a great start and we look forward to continuing this work into 2024 and beyond.”

The Service involves skips being placed in key locations around Gosport, with residents being invited to bring along their household waste and unwanted items for disposal.

These events have been subcontracted to TJ Waste  in their entirety meaning that we supply the skips, the vehicles, our staff to man the events and our insurance to cover them. Five TJ staff work at each event, managing people/car traffic to ensure the day runs smoothly and supporting the correct use of each skip (assisting with direction/guidance).

This all-in-one service is just one of the many versatile service options that falls under our comprehensive waste management services offering.

Upcoming community skip dates and locations include:

  • 9 December – Privett Park Car Park, off Privett Road
  • 23 December – Walpole Park South Car Park, off Haslar Road
  • 6 January – Whites Place Car Park, off Forton Road
