TJ provides Waste Management for We Shine Portsmouth

TJ Waste provided waste management services for We Shine Portsmouth, a three-day art and light installation event, which gives local and national artists the chance to take to the streets to present their works.

The event, which took place in Portsmouth city centre from 18-20 November, consisted of projections on buildings, huge painted murals, large-scale light installations, dance performances, a light parade and more. In addition to this, the We Create Market – a market specialising in local makers, designers and artists – was back for its Christmas edition.

We always strive to deliver a service that is exceptional and seamless in every way and this contract is one of a few we have successfully completed for events in Portsmouth over the past year.

We provided two 12-yard skips to the site, where all the waste generated over the duration of the event was collected for end disposal. We delivered the skips to the site in advance of the event to ensure they were in place well ahead of time.

At the end of the event, we removed the skips and took them back to our Materials Recovery Facility in Portsmouth for sorting to ensure as much of the waste as possible is recycled or reused. All recyclable materials will be directed down the most appropriate routes to ensure complete efficiency.

TJ is dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and we endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste we handle. We have established recycling routes for a wide range of materials from the standard card, paper, metal and plastic bottles, to the more tricky materials such as rubble and hard plastics. We are always working behind the scenes to find new ways to recycle the materials that have proved difficult in the past. Any materials that cannot be reused or recycled are directed down the Energy from Waste (EfW) path wherever possible.

We process all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

TJ Waste General Manager Luke Haskell said:

“This is a very unique event and a great chance for artists from near and far to exhibit their work. We’re pleased to have provided the skips for this event, making the waste disposal as easy as possible for the organisers. We look forward to assisting at further Portsmouth events in the future as needed.”
