TJ to undertake waste management for Great South Run for the 7th year

TJ Waste has won the waste management contract for the Great South Run 2021, which will take place on 16-17 October in Portsmouth. This is the seventh year that TJ has won this prestigious contract.

The Great South Run is one of the world’s leading 10-mile runs, which will see around 25,000 runners enjoying the route around Southsea and southern Portsmouth

TJ will supply 32 1,100L wheelie bins and two 17-yard Roll-On-Roll-Off (RORO) skips for the event. Two TJ operatives will also be on-site during the weekend to help manage the waste and ensure everything goes smoothly.

Working alongside Colas, TJ will position the skips at points throughout the course and the wheelie bins at Clarence Esplanade, where the 10-mile run starts and finishes. From there, the course takes the runners west along the seafront, through various parts of Old Portsmouth and Portsea, before returning to Southsea and up to Eastney where the final stretch will be along the seafront back to Southsea Castle.

After the weekend’s events are complete, all the waste will be taken back to TJ’s Materials Recovery Facility in Tipner, where it will be thoroughly sorted and any recyclables extracted and sent on to recycling facilities.

TJ will deliver the wheelie bins to the site on Friday and the ROROs on Saturday and get them in the correct locations in advance to ensure efficiency. Sunday’s event will kick off from 8am, with the first wave of runners starting at 10am and the last wave setting off at 11am.

Many people run for charity, which means they sign up to raise money for their charity of choice and that charity gifts them their place in the run. This year’s partner charities include: Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, Guide Dogs, Alzheimer’s Society, Breast Cancer Now, Stroke Association, NSPCC, Macmillan Cancer Support, Tommy’s, The Christie Charitable Fund, Mind and Blood Cancer UK.

Prior to the main event on the Sunday, three shorter runs will be held on the Saturday. These are the 5k run, 2.5k junior run for 9-15 year-olds and a 1.5k mini run for 3-8 year-olds. The kids races are great for building up childrens’ enthusiasm for running and there’s optional panto-themed fancy dress for the youngsters, with prizes awarded for the best costumes.
