TJ undertakes waste management for Portsmouth Pride

TJ Waste provided waste management services for Portsmouth Pride, a one-day event which took place on Southsea Common on Saturday 10 June 2023.

The event is free and open to all, bringing together the LGBTQIA+ community to celebrate diversity and inclusivity in the local area. The event is now in its 21st year and has grown substantially over the years.

The event is organised by the Portsmouth Pride CIC, a not-for-profit organisation that works to promote equality and diversity in Portsmouth. In addition to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, the event is also a great opportunity to raise awareness of the issues that still affect LGBTQ+ people, and to campaign for greater acceptance and equality. Next year’s event is already set for Saturday 8 June 2024.

This year, we were employed directly by Portsmouth Pride to take care of the waste management. We provided a number of 1,100l eurobins for the event to enable waste to be collected throughout the day and minimise litter around the site. Several members of TJ staff were present at the event to litter pick throughout the day and we were also responsible for the post-event clean-up.

The bins were delivered to the Common the day before and collected the following day. They were taken back to our Tipner Materials Recovery Facility for sorting and segregating. We’re dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and we recycle up to 100% of the waste we handle.

We have established recycling routes for a wide range of materials from the standard card, paper, metal and plastic bottles, to the more tricky materials such as rubble, hard plastics and mattresses. We’re always working behind the scenes to find new ways to recycle the materials that have proved difficult in the past. Any materials that cannot be reused or recycled are directed down the Energy from Waste (EfW) path wherever possible.

We process all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.
