TJ signs Armed Forces Covenant

TJ has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating our commitment to supporting Armed Forces personnel, reservists, veterans and their families, and aligning our values with those of the covenant.

Agreeing to the terms of the covenant means that TJ will actively encourage applications from veterans and reservists in a bid to provide job opportunities to this valued community as well as increase and enhance our employment pool.

TJ is keen to employ ex-service personnel and support them in the transition from the Armed Forces to civilian life. To do this, TJ will supply additional assistance when needed, including support with wellbeing and by providing training as required. For many, the change in pace after leaving the services will feel like a big change, but we’re happy to help veterans adjust to this to ensure they settle into their new role well.

This support will extend to veteran’s families as well as active reservists. Anyone successfully securing a role at TJ who is part of the reserve forces will be allowed time off to undertake any related duties, and flexibility at other times to ensure the two roles work well together.

TJ learned about the covenant after liaising with Southampton City Council’s Armed Forces Ambassador as part of another project, and decided it would be a great thing to do for the Armed Forces community as well as for ourselves as it could attract skilled people to apply for jobs with us and highlight our name with people that have the skills we’re looking for.

There is a tiered recognition scheme relating to the Armed Forces Covenant called the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, which encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. The scheme encompasses bronze, silver and gold awards for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the armed forces community, and align their values with the covenant.

TJ is hoping to start working towards the bronze award immediately, with a view to working their way up to the silver and gold awards over the coming months and years.

TJ’s Managing Director, John Gosling said:

“When the covenant was brought to our attention, we knew immediately that it was something that we wanted to support, encourage and get involved in. Ex-service personnel have a range of valuable skills that would be utilised well within our company and we’re more than happy to provide the additional support and flexibility needed to ensure they are happy in their roles and able to undertake ongoing Armed Forces duties.”
