The UK is the ninth largest manufacturing nation in the world, with the total value of UK manufacturers’ product sales totalling £396.6 billion in 2019. Manufacturing equates to 11% of the UK’s GVA and employs 2.7 million people.
Dylan joined the TJ Waste team in July and is enjoying the role, particularly the customer interaction side. In his spare time he plays 11-a-side football, and he’s also preparing for his second charity mixed martial arts fight in March. He completed his first one last year to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
It’s a very varied role, with lots of different things to do. I do a lot of work for TJ’s nationwide skip hire service, taking care of any requests that come in for jobs outside of our core area. I work with our network of approved third party suppliers to organise the jobs on the clients’ behalf to ensure they get the skips they need, when they need them.
My other duties include organising permits for skips where these are required and assisting in the operational side too such as helping out with a bit of the planning and taking calls from the drivers and dealing with any queries and issues they have.
I’ve done a bit of a mixture. I studied aeronautical engineering at college and also worked in hospitality during that time. Since completing my course I’ve worked in a couple of customer-facing roles, one within a customer service team for an insurance company and the other in telesales. These roles enabled me to build up a range of customer service skills which has been invaluable since starting my role here at TJ.
I really enjoy dealing with the customers, making sure they get all they need from the service we’re providing. I also love figures and have a very mathematical mind. I like seeing how the business’ figures change from week to week and it motivates me to work hard so that my contribution can help the business do well.
Dealing with delays or issues that are outside of my control. It can be challenging managing all aspects of a job when some of it is being delivered by third-party suppliers, but I always do all I can to keep every element on track to ensure our customers get what they need and that the service they receive is what they expect. The overall aim is to always provide the best possible customer service.
I’ve picked up the IT systems quite well and I’m enjoying that side of it. My colleagues are already asking me to do tasks for them when they need figures pulled from the system and it’s nice to be asked! I’m interested in helping to expand the nationwide skip hire service so I’ll be doing all I can to grow that as well as learn more about TJ as a business.
It has a really nice atmosphere, it’s laid back but professional at the same time, it’s a good balance. I was given quite a lot of training and support when I started and the rest of the team have been really helpful; if there’s anything I need they’re always there to help me!
