Contributing to cleaner communities…

TJ Waste has purchased and donated £1,500-worth of litter pickers and bin hoops to Southampton City Council (SCC) for use at community events. Keeping our communities clean during events such as these is essential for the good of the environment and the continued success of the events.

The equipment was donated in the spring and has already started being used for a series of community engagement events called Love Where You Live. A number of these events are taking place throughout the Southampton area over the coming months, with one having already taken place.

The first event was held in Derby Road, Southampton, on Saturday 21 May. The event, which ran from 11am-4pm was a great success with many local residents and service providers in attendance.

The Love Where You Live Campaign was designed to enhance engagement and build relations between SCC and the local community. What’s more, with waste disposal, littering and fly tipping at the top of people’s list of concerns, these events provide the ideal opportunity for the council to work with residents to tackle these issues.

The event was kicked off with an hour-long litter picking competition and the donated litter pickers and bin hoops proved invaluable. The winner was presented with an award by the Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Jacqui Rayment.

SCC’s Waste Disposal and Development Team were present to knowledge-share on the topics of waste disposal and recycling in a bid to increase participation and increase recycling rates in the city.

The next event is planned to take place on Saturday 10 June from 12pm-3pm at Hampton Park Way, Swaythling. Other planned events include Lordshill on Sunday 16 July, Hoglands Park on Friday 28 July and Millbrook on Saturday 5 August.

TJ has also agreed to provide eurobins for these events to take care of all waste that is generated. All waste will be taken back to our state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility, Dibles Wharf, in central Southampton, for sorting, segregating and onward recycling.

We’re dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill and endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste we handle. We process all waste in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol.

WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

We’ve been working in close partnership with SCC since 2020, when we secured a £7.2M contract to provide commercial waste disposal services. The contract allows the commercial services arm of SCC, which provides waste management services to local businesses, to dispose of waste at Dibles Wharf.
