Providing waste management services for the Alzheimer’s Society’s Portsmouth Memory Walk

TJ Waste is providing waste management services for the Alzheimer’s Society’s Portsmouth Memory Walk, which is taking place on 7 October. The walk aims to bring together those who understand how it feels to be affected by dementia, as well as raise money for this worthy cause.

Those taking part will meet at Canoe Lake in Southsea and can opt for the shorter 1.5km route or the longer 6km route in line with ability and preference. The 1.5km route will  take you along Portsmouth seafront and is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all ages and abilities. The 6km route takes in the sights of Portsmouth Esplanade and is more challenging with a combination of beach and paved paths.

Participants can arrive from 10am, with the first walk commencing at 11am. Registration is free and the fundraising target is £160, though any amount raised will be gratefully received.

The Alzheimer’s Society is  working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. They do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future. The Society is made up of people with dementia, carers, trusted experts, campaigners, researchers and clinicians. They are the UK’s largest collective force of people with unparalleled knowledge and over 40 years of experience addressing the biggest challenges facing people living with dementia.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an annual international event run by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI). The event has been running since 2012, and its aim is to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia.

TJ is providing a eurobin for the event, which will be used to capture all the waste generated by walkers and supporters. We’ll deliver the bin to the site the day before to ensure it’s in place ahead of time.

Following the event we’ll collect the bin and take it back to our Materials Recovery Facility at Tipner for sorting. We’re dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and we endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste we handle.

We have established recycling routes for a wide range of materials from the standard card, paper, metal and plastic bottles, to the more tricky materials such as rubble, hard plastics and mattresses. We’re always working behind the scenes to find new ways to recycle the materials that have proved difficult in the past. Any materials that cannot be reused or recycled are directed down the Energy from Waste (EfW) path wherever possible.

We process all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.
