Report fly tipping incidents to us – we can help!

TJ Waste is dedicated to helping in the fight against fly tipping. It’s something we feel so strongly about that we are inviting members of the public to report any fly-tipping incidents that they come across to us so that we can liaise with the local authority and help them resolve the issue.

Fly-tipping is defined as the ‘illegal deposit of any waste onto land that does not have a licence to accept it’. This happens often throughout the country when people decide they need to dispose of waste but choose not to do it through the approved channels, which could be down to laziness or the desire to avoid charges.

Tipping waste could have detrimental effects on the environment if the waste being dumped is liquid-based, seeping into the ground, or unsafe due to its nature, such as certain types of building waste or asbestos. In addition to that, the area where the waste has been left looks unattractive and run down – both residential and rural areas are affected.

For the 2021/22 year, local authorities in England dealt with 1.09 million fly-tipping incidents; while this was a 4% decrease on 2020/21, it is still a staggeringly high number. The most recent stats show that local authorities are taking a tougher stance on fly tipping, which is something we all need to do in order to drastically improve the situation.

Fly tipping stats

  • The most common place for fly-tipping to occur was on highways (pavements and roads), which accounted for over two fifths (43%) of total incidents in 2021/22.
  • The most common size category for fly-tipping incidents in 2021/221 was equivalent to a ‘small van load’ (32% of total incidents).
  • Local authorities carried out 507,000 enforcement actions in 2021/22, an increase of 11% on 2020/21.
  • The number of fixed penalty notices issued was 91,000 in 2021/22, an increase of 58% from 57,700 in 2020/21.

Since the pandemic, most Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) have put booking systems in place meaning that you now have to register your car online and book a time slot to deposit waste at your local facility. While this may not be as convenient as the previous ‘show up and drop off’ system, it has significantly decreased queueing times and increased accountability.

HOW WE CAN HELP

TJ Waste has extensive knowledge and experience of dealing with and disposing of various hazardous materials, some of which they are able to deal with themselves, and for those that require additional measures, they have a range of qualified partner organisations that they call upon to get the job done effectively and efficiently.

We are well-placed to deal with fly-tipping, and can do so at short notice if required. Our fleet of vans and grab lorries, along with our range of skips, can deal with pretty much any fly-tipping scenario that presents itself.

We approach each case on an individual basis, surveying the situation, materials and location before deciding how to best proceed. We have a range of vehicles and equipment at our disposal, enabling us to deal with each situation in the most appropriate, timely and cost-effective way.

All waste collected by TJ will be taken back to one of our Materials Recovery Facilities at Southampton, Portsmouth or Yapton for it to be processed and where possible, reused or recycled. Anything that is unable to be recycled will be sent for incineration, supporting the Energy from Waste process. TJ is strongly committed to diverting waste from landfill and our partnerships with a range of recycling centres in and outside of Hampshire helps make all this recycling possible.
