SUEZ SITE CLEARANCE

CLIENT BACKGROUND

SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd, formerly SITA UK Limited, is a British waste management company, established in 1988. They employ more than 5,000 people in the UK and since their inception have been managing waste and water for local authorities and business customers.

SUEZ draws on their wide-ranging expertise and services to manage waste more cost- effectively and comply with all regulations as they turn waste into new resources, contributing to a circular economy. They’re confronting the planet’s greatest challenges by working to shape a sustainable environment. They do this by helping their customers make the best possible use of their material and water resources, while reducing their carbon footprints, protecting the environment and driving efficiency.

THE REQUIREMENT

SUEZ held a long leasehold interest in land at ‘Havant Lorry Park’, Southmoor Lane, Havant, which had been sub-let to a number of third parties. As the property was surplus to operational requirements, a decision was taken to surrender the lease. As a condition of a surrender SUEZ was required to provide Vacant Possession of the land.

At TJ, we have a strong working relationship with SUEZ and have worked closely with them as both a supplier and a customer for a number of years. SUEZ contacted us to request an estimate for the work that would need to be carried out in order to clear and responsibly dispose of the unwanted structures and remaining waste from land which had been left behind by a number of the sub-tenants. In response, we put forward a proposal, which contained a plan and a competitive bid for the work. The costs were provided per unit/service, i.e. grab loads, skips, labour per person per day, and disposal of specialist/hazardous items.

We conducted a site visit prior to providing a quote and the scope of works included:

  • Site preparation, RAMS and associated management and welfare inclusive
  • Collection of waste from within site boundary i.e. mechanical and labour to central location for loading
  • Deconstruction of up to 4 x temporary structures including heavy plant and hot works
  • Loading of all waste into appropriate containers/areas on site
  • Removal of all active, non-hazardous waste
  • Identification of hazardous waste (liquid and gaseous) for further disposal quotation
  • Evidence of clearance throughout/end of works to the client

THE SOLUTION

We were awarded the contract based on our competitive quote, flexible and accommodating attitude, our ability to provide a comprehensive, all-in-one service, and our commitment to complete the work within a strict timescale as required.

We provided SUEZ with a range of services in order to responsibly remove and dispose of all the different types of waste that were present on the site. These included:

  • Disposal of hazardous items such as a fridge freezer and several mattresses. We dispose of these with specialist partners who are able to take the items apart to recycle individual elements and materials to ensure that as much as possible is reused and recycled.
  • Disposal of around 15 Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) items. Historically, POPs – a hazardous chemical pollutant – were used in the manufacture of domestic seating. In August 2022, the Environment Agency announced that upholstered domestic seating can no longer be landfilled, mixed with other non-POPs waste, or reused/recycled. In response to this we devised a service to responsibly dispose of any POPs waste.
  • Disposal of liquid waste, which was tested, labelled and packaged ready for onward disposal.
  • Disposal of over 25 tonnes of non-hazardous mixed waste.

We utilised our grab hire, commercial skip hire (35 yard RORO skip) and man and van services to complete the various elements of this job.

Additional services were required as the job progressed and we were happy to provide all that was needed to get the job done efficiently and responsibly. These additional services included:

  • Utilities disconnection from temporary structures – electricity, freshwater and wastewater
  • Surface cleansing as required
  • Disposal of unidentified waste added since initial audit
  • Disposal of hazardous waste (liquid and gaseous)

THE OUTCOME

SUEZ Property Manager (South) Peter Dawe said: “TJ Waste’s flexibility and ‘can do’ attitude was vital in securing Vacant Possession against a tight deadline. As unexpected issues arose, the General Manager, Luke, was always on hand and worked efficiently to find suitable solutions and this adaptability was critical in ensuring a positive outcome.”

TJ Waste General Manager Luke Haskell said: “This contract is a testament to our excellent provision of service; we work well as a team to combine our resources and knowledge to ensure that complex projects like this are dealt with correctly and responsibly. We’d like to invite other opportunities like this; we’ve proved that we’re a trusted partner, capable of undertaking these types of projects successfully and efficiently.”
