MEET GARETH WYVILL, CUSTOMER SERVICE ASSISTANT

Gareth joined the TJ team last month and is enjoying learning the ropes. Outside of work he is a part-time streamer, which sees him painting gaming models online, and he also enjoys making his own dance music.

WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE?

My role is a customer-focused one, largely answering customers’ skip enquiries and ensuring they have all the information they need to book their skip. I take phone calls and reply to emails, answering any questions customers have and booking their skips for them if they wish to go ahead. It’s a very reactive role and we are there to ensure customer enquiries are dealt with swiftly and that everything goes smoothly.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I’m an ex-teacher and before COVID, I taught English as a foreign language for two and a half years in China and a further seven years in Japan. I enjoyed teaching as it was great working with people who wanted to learn, though adults were easier to work with than the kids! I had to be very patient as a teacher and that skill has transferred well into this role as it enables me to always remain calm and helpful with customers, regardless of how many requirements they have.

I’ve also worked in telesales for various companies over the years and the customer service skills I perfected during that time has also lent itself very well to my role here as I’m experienced in dealing with all types of customer queries and know how to handle them most effectively.

WHAT ARE THE MOST INTERESTING PARTS OF YOUR ROLE?

I really like that I get to speak to lots of different people all day, every day. I really enjoy the customer service element, ensuring they go away happy and that they get what they need from us. When I was a student, I worked as a refuse collector and at the recycling centre, which has given me better understanding as well as a small insight into the waste industry.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE?

Getting to grips with the system that everything is run from; there’s a lot to learn but I’m enjoying learning it. Also trying to understand all the different individual customers’ needs is challenging as there are so many of them, so becoming familiar with who they are, whether they have an account and which services they use us for regularly will take some time, but I’m learning more and more each day.

WHAT ARE YOUR INITIAL AIMS AND ASPIRATIONS?

I’d like to get as good as I possibly can at my role so that I’m very competent and efficient and known as someone to go to. In time, I’d love to progress a little if the opportunity arises, perhaps as a team leader or supervisor.

WHY IS TJ A GREAT PLACE TO WORK?

It’s nice to work for a local company and the short commute is great. It has a laid back atmosphere and everyone is very friendly, supportive and easy going. The management team trusts you to get on with your job and do it well, which is a great working environment to be in.
