Waste disposal options for your home or garden project

Everywhere you look, people are renovating their houses, having building work done or revamping their garden or driveway! It seems that the pandemic has made us refocus on things closer to home and that improving our houses and gardens has become a priority.

We offer a range of services that could really make things easier for you if you’re embarking on a house or garden project soon. Whether you’re DIY-ing or hiring a tradesperson to do the work for you, you’ll need to think about which waste disposal options would suit you best.

At TJ, we have a range of options and our flexible service makes it easy for you to access exactly what you need, when you need it. Although waste is second nature to us, we understand that it’s not that way for everyone so if you’re unsure where to start, get in touch with our friendly and knowledgeable team, who will be more than happy to guide you through the options.

Waste disposal on the south coast…

At TJ we offer a range of skips to suit every requirement:

The smallest skip available, the ‘mini’ 2 yard skip can accommodate approximately 20 bin bags full of waste, making it perfectly placed for small domestic jobs such as garden work and DIY projects.

With the capacity to accommodate approximately 40 bin bags full of waste, the 4 yard skip is ideal for a range of home projects, as well as major garden clearances.

The classic builders’ skip, the 6 yard skip has ample space to accommodate approximately 60 bin bags. This skip is perfect for moderate amounts of bulky waste – making them ideal for domestic projects such as kitchen and bathroom refits and other home renovations.

The 8 yard mega skip is the most popular skip size in the UK, perfect for large, bulky items as well as heavy waste. In terms of capacity, it is able to accommodate approximately 60-80 bin bags’ worth (depending on the type of waste you are disposing of) but this should give you a good idea of how much it will take.

The 12 yard jumbo skip can hold approximately 120 bags of waste and accommodate large amounts of high volume waste such as metal, wood, plastics and packaging. It’s important to note that skips of this size are not suitable for heavy loads such as rubble and concrete, as it will make the skip too heavy to be lifted once full.

You could opt to go for a ‘skip exchange’ arrangement whereby your full skip is taken away and replaced with an empty one, giving you a constant waste disposal option on-site, ideal for longer projects. This works well because as soon as the skip is approaching capacity, you can call us and schedule an exchange to ensure seamless disposal. We will arrive on time and do the swap quickly and efficiently so that your project can continue as planned.

Skips can be filled with a range of different types of waste, so whatever project you’re undertaking, our skip hire service will be able to take care of your waste disposal for you. Below is a list of materials commonly disposed of in our skips – please get in touch to ask about unusual types of waste not listed here:

  • Wood

  • Electrical cabling
  • Cardboard
  • Packaging / polystyrene
  • Glass / windows / frames

  • Plasterboard
  • Asbestos
  • Liquid waste of any nature
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Pressurised containers e.g. gas bottles
  • Batteries
  • Car engines or tyres

Grab hire is ideal for larger domestic projects such as large-scale landscaping and driveway renewals as it enables large volumes of waste to be removed quickly and easily, providing there is sufficient access to the property.
We operate both 6 and 8-wheel grab lorries; our 6-wheel grabs have a load capacity of 12m3 (approximately 11 – 13 tonnes) and our 8-wheel grabs have a load capacity of 15m3 (approximately 14 – 16 tonnes).
Grab vehicles are perfectly equipped to load a wide range of waste types, including builders’ waste, inert spoil, concrete, bricks, asphalt and green waste. Our fleet is available to hire for waste collection and disposal per load, day or contract mileage basis.

If you’re the contractor undertaking a project on behalf of your customer and they’ve tasked you with the waste disposal, remember that we’re here to cater for all your waste removal needs. If you prefer to dispose of the waste yourself, keep in mind that we have three Materials Recovery Facilities dotted along the south coast at Southampton, Portsmouth and Yapton where you can tip your waste.

In addition to this, we accept all rubble and hardcore at our Butser Quarry site near Petersfield, free of charge. To unload, you simply need to hold a waste carrier’s licence and be wearing a hard hat, hi-vis top and steel toed boots to ensure your safety. Find out more about tipping your rubble with us…

Disposing of your rubble with us is quick, easy and free! But what’s more, we’ll put your rubble to good use, reusing it to make recycled aggregates rather than sending it to landfill. These recycled aggregates are a great alternative to primary ones for certain uses, preserving our primary materials for where they’re needed most.
