A responsible waste carrier – trust in TJ

At a time when sustainability is high on the agenda, it’s time to think about all the ways in which we can make a difference.

As our name suggests, we’re all about waste! We specialise in removing and disposing of your waste, whether domestic or commercial, but the important thing to know about TJ, is that we try to treat it as ‘waste’ as infrequently as possible.

We are dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill, so we endeavour to repurpose, recycle and reuse as much as we can. We recycle up to 100% of the waste that we handle and anything that falls outside of that is directed down the Energy from Waste (EfW) route.

We process all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

Helping in the fight against fly tipping

Some companies claim to offer waste disposal services, but then simply dump the waste after collection to avoid the cost of disposing of it correctly. We’re passionate about helping in the fight against fly tipping and have assisted in a number of situations over the past year or so.

We assisted Southampton City Council when they fell victim to a fly-tipping incident on their land. We organised the removal of a container filled with paint thinner that had been dumped on a nature reserve in the Southampton area.

We also provided crucial assistance to help resolve a large-scale fly-tipping incident in the grounds of Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The incident involved a lorry tipping a large load of mixed domestic waste into the park grounds after forcing its way through a padlocked gate. The vehicle became stuck and the driver abandoned the lorry.

We were contacted by a local private land and asset management company who required assistance in clearing an area of land where some general and construction waste had been illegally fly-tipped. The land, near the B&Q superstore in Bedhampton, is privately-owned and managed by the company who enlisted our help.

Recycling

We are constantly working to find new routes for materials to be directed down for recycling and we currently have a number of avenues in place for a range of traditionally tricky items such as rubble, mattresses, fridge freezers, WEEE and hard plastics.

Rubble

We invite construction companies, contractors and those in the building industry to drop off any unwanted concrete, bricks, paving slabs and stone at our registered waste site near Petersfield during opening hours. We will then crush this hardcore and use it to make several recycled aggregates that we produce in-house. So not only are we diverting these materials from landfill, which is a plus for the environment, but it is also being put to good use in its own right.

Mattresses

We have a contract with a local organisation to dispose of large numbers of used mattresses each year, making the process easier as well as more eco-friendly. Most modern mattresses are made of different types of foam with a textile covering, so they are taken apart to separate the different materials and then categorised so that each part can be recycled separately.

Fridge freezers

Fridges require separate disposal from other items as they need to be degassed to ensure the cfc gases are dealt with safely and that the fluorescent strips are carefully handled and this is a service that TJ provides.

WEEE

WEEE should be disposed of correctly to ensure treatment, recycling and recovery of the elements that make up the equipment. All electrical waste contains chemicals that are harmful to the environment. When WEEE is dumped in landfills, it decays over time and leaks toxins into the earth and our waste systems. TJ offers a collection service that will ensure that your WEEE goes to the right place.

Hard plastics

We’re always looking for new and better ways to recycle plastic. When we established a new recycling process for certain types of plastics in 2019, we soon realised that unwanted plastic ice cream tubs and offcuts would be ideal for it. One of our clients is Jude’s Ice Cream and they were happy for us to manage this for them. The plastic tubs are made into a new product – pellets – which can be moulded into new plastic products. The latest equipment for recycling plastic materials is used in this recycling process to ensure that the highest quality products are maintained.

Working partnerships

The Final Straw Foundation

We’ve formed an official partnership with the Final Straw Foundation, a charity dedicated to improving ocean health and reducing plastic waste. Together, we work on a shared goal of maximising the amount of waste that makes it to the correct end destinations, ensuring responsible disposal.

In the past TJ has assisted the charity in disposing of some tricky waste materials including emptying Nellie, a huge metal fish-shaped container which was full of plastic bottles and an old boat that needed clearing during a beach clean.

UK Remediation

TJ has a strong working partnership with UK Remediation, who are contaminated land specialists. TJ uses UK Remediation’s services when they have aggregates that need to be processed / treated, either on behalf of their clients or as part of their own groundworks projects. UK Remediation in turn utilises TJ’s haulage and muckaway services, both for themselves and their clients as and when required.

Trust in us

We are a reputable, reliable, family-run business, with a safe, modern fleet and a reputation for excellence. We’re an extremely responsible waste carrier when many others are not. If you choose us to dispose of your waste, you can rest assured that it will be directed down the correct route each and every time to ensure that it ends up where it should.

For our commercial customers, we supply a Waste Transfer Note so that you know exactly where your waste has gone. We are constantly reviewing our processes to ensure that we are directing materials down the best routes even as things change.

We have a network of partners that we use to dispose of the different materials correctly and safely. We work with companies that are able to treat certain materials to make them safe for onward disposal and we ensure that the correct route is taken every time, providing evidence for both our records and the clients’.

Find out more about our skip hire and grab hire services, or our muckaway service for larger volumes of materials such as soil and rubble. If your company is looking for an on-going commercial waste management service, we can help with this too.

If you are unsure of any aspect of your waste management or disposal, please get in touch and we can help get you on the right track. You can also email any enquiries to enquiries@tj-waste.co.uk.
