Your guide to skip hire

Every now and then you’ll take on a project that will result in your need for a skip. This could be an overdue clear out of your garden or garage, ripping out an old kitchen or bathroom or perhaps you’ve just moved into a house full of old carpets that need ripping out and disposing of… the list goes on.

At these busy, and let’s face it, sometimes stressful times, you’d be wise to do all you can to make your life as easy as possible. Hiring a skip, rather than endless trips to the tip would be a good start.

A skip for every project

At TJ, we have skips available in all sizes from 2 yard ‘mini’ skips, right up to huge 35 yard containers. But which one is right for you?

2 yard ‘mini’ skip: this is ideal for small domestic and garden jobs. It will hold 20-30 bin bags’ worth of waste and as they are compact, they can be easily placed in small gardens or driveways and won’t take up much space.

4 yard ‘midi’ skip: perfect for projects such as kitchen or bathroom refits or garden clearance, this skip can hold 30-40 bin bags. As one of our smaller skips, it is also good if space is limited.

6 yard ‘maxi’ skip: this is the original builder’s skip and one of the most frequently hired. It can hold between 50 and 60 bin bags of waste, which makes it ideal for medium-sized projects such as house renovations and clearance of gardens, garages and lofts.

8 yard ‘mega’ skip: the most popular skip size in the UK, this skip can hold 60-80 bin bags’ worth of waste. It is often used for bulky and heavy waste such as rubble, soil or concrete and is perfect for major renovation work or full house clearance.

12 yard ‘jumbo’ skip: ideal for larger jobs such as full office or house clearances as well as a range of commercial projects, this skip can hold the equivalent of around 120 bin bags. They are often utilised by shopfitters and on building and construction sites.

Roll on/off skips: TJ offers two sizes of roll on/off skips – the 17 yard and the 35 yard. Both are typical used within the commercial and industrial sectors, for large volume commercial waste producers and large scale construction operations.

Dimensions of our skips can be found on each individual skip page.

Our service to you

If you choose to hire a skip with us, you can expect the highest level of service. TJ has been awarded the Feefo Gold Trusted Service Award for the fourth year running – an independent seal of excellence that recognises businesses for delivering exceptional experiences, as rated by real customers.

TJ met the award criteria by collecting at least 50 reviews with a Feefo service rating of between 4.5 and 5.0 during 2018. This accreditation is a badge of honour as all reviews are verified as genuine, making it a true reflection of TJ’s commitment to outstanding service.

Dotting the i’s

You’ll be able to keep the skip for up to two weeks, but if you choose to have it collected after four days or less, you’ll benefit from a 5% discount. Once you’ve made your booking, we will take it from there. You’ll receive a text to confirm your order and then emails throughout the process to keep you informed, ensuring you know what’s going on every step of the way.

If you’ve prepaid for your skip and given any delivery instructions you might have, there’s no need for you to wait in on the day. Similarly, one of our efficient and helpful drivers will collect the skip on the agreed pick-up date without fuss.

Top 5 things to consider when hiring a skip

  1. When’s the best time to hire your skip?  Is there a good time of the year for the type of project you’re doing? Will you need it at the beginning of your project or at the end? Remember that we offer next working day delivery if you need your skip in a hurry!
  2. Where will you put it? Make sure you have enough room in your garden or on your driveway and that your property is accessible to enable delivery of the skip.
  3. If you do not have a driveway or anywhere for a skip to go, TJ can arrange a permit for you to store it on the street outside your house at an extra cost.
  4. Did you know? Certain things cannot be disposed of in your skip such as plasterboard (unless you hire a plasterboard-only skip), liquid waste, fridges, freezers and TVs. See the full list here.
  5. What else will you need to get the project done? Make a list of all the other things you’ll need such as equipment, materials and maybe even an extra pair of hands to help you! If you have everything you need ready to go, your project will run more smoothly.
