First Home Improvements

Client background

One of the longest-established double glazing companies with roots going back to the early 1970s, First Home Improvements offer a first class service to help their customers select the best double glazing and related products to meet their needs.

First Home Improvements have 16 branches across the UK, each with its own team of designers, surveyors, installers, builders and support staff. They offer exclusive and innovative products that are made to the highest possible standards using traditional hand crafted methods and all their uPVC units are sourced from quality assured suppliers.

Home energy use alone accounts for 27% of UK CO2 emissions which contribute to climate change. By making buildings more energy efficient we can reduce energy and prevent energy waste. In the UK alone, fitting better windows could reduce carbon emissions by almost 5 million tonnes. Since 2008, First Home Improvements has been supplying only “A” rated energy efficient products, which remain largely unrivalled by our competitors.

The requirement

When First Home Improvement’s Portsmouth depot opened six months ago, Paul Williams immediately thought of TJ for their waste management. As en ex-builder, Paul had used TJ many times in the past and had always been happy with the service he received. and their Southampton branch also uses TJ’s services and have always been satisfied customers. So they decided to stick to what they know is good!

As a UPVC double glazing company, the work teams bring back a lot of waste from each project they carry out. So several different waste options were required to dispose of the different types of waste they generate.

The solution

They opted for an 8-yard skip for all the unwanted glass, a 1100-litre eurobin for asbestos waste and  a 35-yard roll-on-roll-off skip for everything else. TJ provided these bins soon after the request was made and exchange them for empty ones on an ad-hoc basis whenever Paul informs them they are full. Paul said: “Just today I called TJ to ask if we could have the skips exchanged soon and they said they would be here tomorrow morning! Extremely efficient service!”

TJ takes the full skips back to their materials recovery facility in Tipner and sorts through them to ensure that as much of the waste is recycled as possible. The asbestos bin goes directly to a specialist facility that deals with that waste separately and safely.

The challenge

After the bins were originally delivered, First Home Improvements decided they wanted to move them to a different part of the site. They contacted TJ and asked them if they were able to do this and TJ were very accommodating. They arrived the next day to move the bins and skips and did so swiftly, causing no disruption to the site and without an additional charge for this service.

First Home Improvements also had another issue in that other roll-on-roll-off skips in the vicinity had been stolen, as had a few at other depots around the UK. Paul was concerned about keeping his skip secure, so TJ sourced and supplied him with a ‘hitchlock’, a lock that stops the skips from being taken.

The outcome

Paul said:

“We’re extremely pleased with the service we’ve received. TJ always provides an efficient service and everything is turned around very quickly. When we ask for something, they usually get it done for us the next day, which is fantastic. The drivers are always polite and helpful. TJ always go above and beyond to meet our needs and we couldn’t ask for anything more.”
