Mitie at Rolls Royce

Company background

Mitie provides facilities management, consultancy, project management and a range of specialist services that connect people with innovation and technology; helping their clients go beyond FM to the Connected Workspace. They work in partnership with organisations to deliver long-term value, offering a wide range of services – from real estate and energy consultancy, compliance, risk assessment and security systems to cleaning, catering and environmental services. We manage and maintain some of the nation’s most recognised landmarks, high street buildings and even homes in your community.

Mitie is the resident contractor for the Rolls Royce sites at Chichester where the cars are built and Bognor, where the parts warehouse is located. They look after waste and recycling on site to ensure that Rolls Royce’s 0% waste to landfill tolerance is upheld.

The requirement

Mitie had a requirement for the provision of skip hire at their two sites; the manufacturing site where the cars are built and the warehouse site, where spare parts are stored and dispatched from. The skips must be delivered and collected on an ad-hoc basis, which can sometimes be at short notice, with occasional additional skips also being requested.
Mitie wanted to partner with a like-minded company to themselves – pro recycling – and one that was experienced and customer-focused.

The solution

Mitie went out to tender to several companies and TJ Waste won the contract. One of the reasons Mitie selected TJ was because they could see that commitment to recycling and diversion from landfill were top priorities for TJ.

TJ supplies ad hoc skips to Mitie’s two Rolls Royce sites, ensuring all drop-offs and pick-ups are carried out safely and efficiently. They understand that all waste leaving the sites must be weighed and this is then recorded on Rolls Royce’s database so that waste generated per car built can be estimated.

TJ then take the skips back to their materials recovery facility at Yapton where they thoroughly sort through the materials, ensuring as much as possible is recycled or reused and that nothing goes to landfill.

The challenge

It’s always a logistical challenge to get skips in and out of the site, which is in an extremely busy location on the A27. TJ’s highly skilled drivers always manage it successfully and make it look effortless. Recently, Mitie needed an extra skip for a last-minute project and they required it immediately. TJ met the challenge and delivered the additional skip promptly, going above and beyond to ensure customer needs were met.

The outcome

Site manager Brett Jones said:

“I knew of TJ before I worked for Mitie and I’ve watched them grow as a company. It’s great to support local businesses and TJ’s reputation precedes them. The service they provide is excellent and their documentation is spot on.“

TJ is now listed as a Mitie preferred supplier and is the only company permitted to deliver skips on-site. Mitie has stated that they set the bar high with a lot of accreditations required, but TJ met that bar and more.

Weighing the skips as they are brought on-site empty and as they are removed full is very time-consuming, but TJ always ensure that this is done accurately. TJ’s drivers position the skips in just the right places, which can be tricky, but they use their range of skills to ensure this is done well.

A few words about TJ

“TJ deliver a fantastic service at a good price and always bend over backwards to provide exceptional service as well as any extras we require. They’re trustworthy and friendly and I’d highly recommend them.”
