2022: the year in review

2022 has been a successful year for TJ Waste, despite the many challenges the UK has faced this year. The world started returning to a more normal ‘normal’ for the first time since the pandemic hit, which has allowed things to start to improve in many industries. That said, 2022 has seen many new issues arising that have caused problems for the entire nation.

The soaring fuel and energy prices has affected businesses greatly as they’ve had to find the extra funds to keep themselves operational whilst also remaining competitive in the market. In addition to that, 16% of businesses have reported that inflation of goods and services prices was amongst their top concerns. We have worked hard to absorb as many of the inflated operational costs as possible to protect our customers from rising prices.

The recruitment market has presented challenges too, with 28% of businesses with more than 10 employees experiencing a shortage of workers. Despite this, TJ has managed to stay fully staffed and operational throughout the year, attracting new staff to join the business due to our reputation, competitive salaries and the great team atmosphere that we promote in all areas of the business.

Working around these obstacles, we have had much to celebrate this year, including a variety of new contracts won, existing ones well-maintained, new staff employed, existing staff invested in, accolades won, new services launched, our fleet enhanced,  new IT systems implemented, goods and services donated to worthy causes, fundraising for charities, and sponsorship provided to community events.

2022 highlights

Award-winning services
A fantastic start to the year for the third year running with us being awarded the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service award. The award is an independent seal of excellence that recognises businesses for delivering exceptional experiences, as rated by real customers. Then in the autumn, we gained SafeContractor accreditation – also for the third consecutive year – after successfully passing the audit carried out by the awarding body Alcumus SafeContractor.

Award finalists!
We submitted entries for three National Recycling Awards in the spring and received the fantastic news in September that we were shortlisted for all three! The categories were Employee Training and Skills, Partnership Excellence – Public/Private Sector, and Recycled Product of the Year with our iBlend aggregate. The National Recycling Awards are the most prestigious awards in the recycling and resource management sector; they seek to recognise and reward excellence and inspire others, for the advancement of the sector.

New IT system implemented
We implemented a new cloud-based IT system in the spring, making our products and services more accessible to our customers and ensuring even higher levels of customer service. The system is a specialist waste management software that has been tailored specifically to our individual requirements so that it works the way we need it to. It allows us to provide instant online quotes to customers, taking into consideration the required skip size and the type of waste that needs to be disposed of. It has built-in resilience and can be used remotely, allowing staff to work from any location.

Victorious
2022 saw us successfully complete our sixth year as the waste management provider for the Victorious festival in Southsea at the end of August. We’ve built a strong partnership with the Victorious organisers, Victorious Festivals Ltd, over the past six years and the recurring awarding of the contract is a testament to the consistently high level of customer service we provide. We supplied over 400 wheelie bins for the event along with a team of over 30 operatives to ensure the site was well looked after at all times.

Sponsorship and donations
We have provided sponsorship to many events and sports clubs this year, which is one of the ways that we give a little something back to the community. We sponsored the Portsmouth Marathon for the sixth year running, Denmead Beer Festival, Wickham Charity Beer Festival, the South Downs Show, Yapton Summer Fair and the Clanfield Challenge.

We’ve also made donations to a number of charities  during the year to help them complete projects that will benefit others. We made a monetary donation to the Big Give Project and we’ve donated skips to the Petersfield RFC Strongman Competition, Solent MindWessex Heartbeat and the Rose Road Association.

Charity fundraising
Each year we get involved in a range of fundraising activities for various charities and 2022 was no exception. September saw us take part in Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, raising over £175 for this fantastic cause. Throughout the year we host monthly ‘dress down’ days, whereby staff pay a £2.50 donation to wear casual clothes for the day, with the funds raised going to a different charity each month. Charities that have benefitted in 2022 include The Fostering Network, The Ukraine Red Cross Appeal, NICU at Princess Anne Hospital, Stubbington Ark, Jeans for Genes, the Wessex Kidney Centre at QA Hospital and Save the Children.
